AP Art History I     FALL 2011  HOMEWORK SHEET 1      HW #1- #6 due Monday, September 19

Homework & notetaking instructions

TEXTS:  Gardner’s ART THROUGH THE AGES   12th  Edition
                ART ACROSS TIME , 2nd Edition by Adams
Directions:  Use a NOTE-TAKING style for answers to all questions
(Lists, phrases, abbreviations.  Do NOT write sentences)
                      Use the section headings in the text as guide for note taking.

Cut out each hw section and paste it to the top of the homework sheet. Then just write the numbers and answers below.

HW #1                 Introduction 
1      Scan this section for an overview of the study of Art History.  Jot down any notes you wish to remember --- and any words which are unfamiliar.
2      Read about the questions art historians ask.  Make a list of them.
3      Read about the words art historians use.  List.

HW #2               “The Birth of Art”
1     Look at map and time line to acquaint yourself with the chronology of time.
         Imagine the living conditions under the advance & retreat of ice.
2     Look at early sculptures of humans –  Venus of Willendorf & Woman Holding Bison Horn    What do such figures represent?
3    Take notes on the cave paintings, their relation to the site, the surface and materials used, their style.
4     List possible reasons for the creation of these animal paintings.

HW #3               “Neolithic Art” 
1   Take notes on art of Neolithic people in relation to change in life style from
                                                                     hunting-gathering   to  food production  (agriculture)
2    List characteristics of Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.
3    Read about Jericho & Çatal Hüyük.  Take notes on major points.
4    Take notes  on  the likely purpose of structures such as Stonehenge?
       Look at diagrams.   Diagram and label post & lintel construction.
5    Definemegalith, cromlech, lintel, trilithon , menhir, solstice
6    Look at MMA world map 20,000-8,0000 bc

HW #4         Sumer                  
1   Look at map and time line.      Look at samples of the ‘major images.’
2.  Take notes on Sumer – Inventions, Writing,  City-States, Famous Ziggurat 
            &  use of ‘narrative’  --  Gilgamesh
3.  Diagram  & annotate a votive figure found at Tell Asmar
4.  Read  about objects found in Royal Graves of Ur.  List significant ones w/ a few notes about each.

HOMEWORK #5 Akkadian,, Neo-Sumerian, Babylonian, Hittite Art
1 Look at ” Head of Akkadian ruler” Make a few notes about this work.
2 Diagram “Victory Stele of Naram-Sin.” Take a few notes about this work.
3 Take notes on Gudea.
4 Read Box on “Hammurabi’s Law Code. “
Notate what is importance of figures in the Stele
5 Read about the Hittites. Diagram the “Lion Gate” at Bogaskoy.

HOMEWORK #6 Elamite & Assyrian Art
1 Make a” chronology” of succession of dominance. (How did steles of Naram-Sin, Hammurabi end up in Susa?)
Take notes on Portrait of Queen Napur-Asu.
2 List features of Fortress Palace built by Sargon II at Khorsabad.
3 Explain use of human-animal composition used as “guardian.”
4 What is purpose of the images on the great stone slabs used to line entrance passages & important interiors?
5 Define: cuneiform, crenellation, lamassu, stele
6 Put a marker ribbon in your place in chapter in G text. Turn to Glossary at end of book. Leave a ribbon there.
