HW # 24 Art of Late Antiquity
1 Look at map Read Introduction in both texts. List significant dates.
2 Pagans, Christians, Jews. Take notes on significance of “Edict of Milan.”
3 “Catacombs & Funerary Art.” List burial practices. List most popular themes in Old Testament.
4 Keep reading in both texts. Identify qualities of Roman influence which persist & the ways in which the art differs from Roman art.
5 Old St. Peter’s, begun CE 333. (Probably the most important design in history of church architecture)

1 Read about difference w/central plan church favored in the East. Take notes on central plan churches & basilica type churches with digrams & labels for each.
2 Look at mosaics seen in Santa Costanza. List transformation of image of Jesus. From what to what?
3 List Four Evangelists. Research and list their symbols.
4 Look at “Parting of Lot and Abraham” Define head cluster and it's narrative function in this piece.
5 Read about “Mosaics” “Illuminated Manuscript” “Ivory Plaques”

HW #26 Byzantium
1 Read about Byzantine Art in both texts. Define Byzantium. List significant architectural works (with places and dates) built under the reign of Justinian. List 3 periods of Byzantine art with dates.

Read and make short lists of notes and dates on "Constantinople” and ”Justinian & Theodora” “Hagia Sophia” Briefly outline history of Constantinople with significant dates.
