COURSE OVERVIEW   -   Advanced Placement ART HISTORY

A course in the history of art from prehistoric times to the Renaissance, presented chronologically in a context of ideas, theory and style.  The relationship of art to the culture of the period in which it was made will be explored.  Color slides and reproductions will be used in class lectures.  Students will develop an “eye” and the vocabulary to discuss periods and styles in art, as well as individual artists and their contributions.  Museum visits and reports are required.  Note taking skills (from class lectures and from the textbook) will be developed.  The course will continue in the spring term to cover the period from the Renaissance to the contemporary.  The Advanced Placement Examination in Art History is administered in May.

NOTE:  Cover it.      Keep it at home.         Do not bring it to school.
There are copies in the Library if you wish to do your homework or study in school.
Do not take it out of your house.  Read it on a flat surface. 

                RECOMMENDATION:  Buy a used copy of the text - on line, or  at any college book store,
                                                                or at Strand Book Store   B'way & 14th St.   (212)  473 1452
                                                                If you own your own book,  you can write in it, use highlighter, etc.
                                                              

REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE

  1. Notebook for taking notes in class – loose leaf or spiral, with course requirements taped to inside cover
  2. Letter size (8.5" x 11") lined paper for homework – store at home in a 3 hole binder after it is returned
  3. Three (3) museum visits & reports per semester.
  4. Daily attendance and punctuality.  (Missed quizzes cannot be made up.)
  5. Class participation
  6. Homework collected every Monday (or 1st day of the week)  Late homework not accepted.
    All assignments will be posted online.

 

CRITERIA FOR FINAL GRADE

            20%        Quizzes (Average of 5 best marks)
            20%        Test I  (Midterm)
            20%        Test II (Final)
            20%        Museum Report (average of 3 grades)
            15%        Homework
            05%        Class Participation
          100%

 

The main objectives of AP curriculum in Art History are to develop in students:

  1. the ability to apply fundamental art and art historical terminology.
  2. an appreciation for the process of making and displaying art.
  3. an understanding of purpose and function of art.
  4. the abilty to analyze works of art in context of historical evidence and interpretation, examining such issues as politics, religion, patronage, gender, and ethnicity.
  5. an understanding of cross-cutural and global nature of art.
  6. the ability to perform higher order thinking skills and articulate visual and art historical concepts in verbal and written forms.
