Summer 2016 Art History Museum Assignment for all LaGuardia Senior Art Majors.   Due on the first day of school!
This assignment will count as 10% of your grade for first marking period, and may also count as quiz #1.

*If you are going to be away from New York for the entire summer, then your deadline may be extended if documentation is provided.

FORMAT AND FINAL CHECKLIST FOR REPORT:

- Cover page with receipts from each museum, and the four required photographs of you in each space. Be sure to include the museum names, date, your name, period/teacher. (40 pts.)

- Completed worksheet (no need to re-type, just print this page and write your answers.) (60 pts.)

"Pay What You Wish" on Friday evenings beginning at 7 pm. The last tickets are issued at 9:30pm. (Be sure to visit the outdoor spaces too!)

1. Print this worksheet after reading through the instructions and following any links you may need.

Take it with you to the museums.


2. Photograph yourself at each museum and Art in the Parks installation. Include the photos on the cover of the report. Save all museum receipts and attach them to the cover sheet.


3. Museum of Modern Art:


- Find Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night and really look at it. Wander around this painting section, enjoy seeing familiar paintings as well as works that you've never seen.


- Find any two works that you find inspiring, (sculpture, painting, design, architectural models, etc.) and that you would like to know more about. Identify each with full identification (artist, title, date, medium) as indicated:

4. Metropolitan Museum.


- View and Study Thomas Hart Benton’s America Today Mural. Be sure to see Thomas Hart Benton’s sketches in the adjacent room.


- Take a photo of yourself in front of the mural.  Include it on the cover sheet.


- List a few questions and personal observations that come to your mind as you view this work.

    Describe the distinctive characteristics of Northwest Coast Art in this gallery.

- Wander through the whole museum. Find two more works in different sections of the museum that draw your attention, or otherwise interest you. Choose works that you might like to thoroughly research in the fall, as there may be an opportunity to participate in a research project at the Metropolitan Museum. 5. Whitney Museum. Look around the whole museum. Enjoy! Photograph yourself in front of any work you choose. Include it on the cover sheet. Be sure to go outside on the museum terraces.
